Believe it or not, there’s a lot of power in letting go and moving on. I know it doesn’t feel like it. I know that at this point, you are focusing on what happened in the past. You’re thinking that if you were to keep dwelling on what happened, maybe you will be able to figure it out. Maybe with enough contemplation, things would fall into place and you would see the rhyme and reason for the negative things that happened.
Well, let me ask you a question. What happened with the previous days when you thought this way? How about the days before that?
Many years ago I found myself seeing through a veil of emotional pain and hurt. My mind was foggy, and looking back seemed to be easier than looking ahead. I felt stuck in my situation. I needed a push because the support of family and friends didn’t provide enough motivation. I had to take matters into my own hands because the truth was, focusing on the past wasn’t helping.
Listen, life can be tough. You don’t need a graduate degree to understand that. However, if you are completely honest with yourself, you would also understand that even though bad things happened, your life is not a complete disaster.
Sure, you may be frustrated in certain areas of your life but welcome to the club. Nobody’s immune. It’s just part of the package deal called life. How can you ever master your life or take full ownership of your life if a lot of your mental attention is sucked up by the things that you cannot control? I’m talking about people in the past. I’m talking about situations in the past. I’m talking about people right now that you cannot control.
The way you respond to what’s going on in your life is your area of competency. Use it. This is your area of control. It’s the only area of control that you have. The good news is the more you focus on it, the more competent and self-confident you become.
You have to understand that despite your frustration, and disappointment there are areas of your life that give you hope. You just need to have a clear understanding of where these areas are and how you can build on them to improve your outlook. It’s in these areas that you haven’t completely dropped the ball. You haven’t completely messed up. Isn’t that a cause for celebration? Isn’t that something to feel good about?
I choose to focus on the positive aspects of life and move on. It is here that we have control and given enough time, your area of control will grow. As the old saying goes, “Where your focus goes, energy flows.” This enables you to become a more responsible and powerful person. Focus on the positives and move on from what you normally waste your time, attention, and emotional energy on.
